Volkswagen unveils "new" New Beetle
Auburn Hills, Michigan - Volkswagen of America unveiled the 2006 "new" New Beetle and New Beetle convertible at its U.S. headquarters. The upcoming design maintains the Beetle's core design but incorporates bolder, slightly sharper body lines, tailored bumpers, more oval headlight treatment and new taillight designs. The interior receives a new instrument cluster, with chrome applications on the instruments and air vents.
The 2006 New Beetle will be launched in September 2005 and will come standard with a more powerful new 150 hp, 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine, which replaces the 115 hp, 2.0-litre four-cylinder. Traction control and electronic stabilization program will be standard equipment.

Doesn't look too bad. I still wouldn't really want to be caught in a non-turbo, even then I wouldn't really want to be in it. But the interior looks great.

The orange strip in the corner of the bumper, not only is it the turn signal, but it is there to satisfy federal regulations on side reflectors. The same strips appear at the rear, but in red.

well it was stated the 2.5 I5 would replace the 2.0 I4, but they have no mention of a turbo model. I assume the 2.0t will replace teh 1.8t but they dont mention it so maybe the turbo will take a one year hiatus, or maybe theyll keep hte 1.8t?
and the interior, i wish they had doen a bit more, paricularly make the tac bigger.

Personally, I can't see any difference other than new wheels and new taillights. Would someone like to post pictures of a 2005 next to the 2006 pics so I can see the differences more easily? I got a feeling the facelifted PT Cruiser will be the same way.

It's this attention to detail that will help the car find its market. Honstly, I think the daisy would have clashed with the vintage exterior and interior deaign highlights of the new model so it's a very smart move. :D

If VW pulls the plug on this, and moves Jetta production for the NA market to the US, then what is Puebla Mexico going to build?

If anything.

they should maybe let the beetle take a 1 year hiatis before replcaing it with a new model. maybe even spur more interest in the beetle wtih a 4 door version, which created a lot of sales for the wrangler. i'm not suggesting a full 4 door family sedan but maybe rear suicide doors like the RX-8 or a CLS type version of the Beetle.

Yes the New Beetle is on its final legs :(

Mexico will build Jetta Mk6 aka NCS; the American plant will only build the NMS.

Yeah a 4 door aint a bad idea I think VW want to expand in that direction.

Bingo. There's more than one way to get Americans to buy a Golf. A Beetle hybrid would be a brilliant next step. Take on the Priusite with something iconic.

I've read that VW is studying the idea of building a new Beetle based on the same platform used by the upcoming VW Up! entry-level car. If Up! had stayed rear-wheel drive the new Beetle would have went back the configuration of the original air-cooled Beetles.

No riskier than a Prius. The Beetle will always be low volume because it is a style statement so it makes sense to make it a hybrid. The "flower power" idea could be great marketing.

The time for studying is over. The Up (and it needs to be called that), a Beetle, a Space Up (call it Microbus), and a crossover that looks like the Thing all built in China for price competitiveness would go a long way toward getting VW to their greater-than-Toyota sales goals.

CosworthKid

A hybrid Beetle should have been a no-brainer for VW. It WILL sell, especially if its on a new generation model. Fiat managed to make the tiny 500 look like a million dollars (it just looks effortlessly premium to me even if its not) so VW can do the same with a new Beetle. Heck, they can hire Italian designers if they must (but NOT engineers) and make the new new New Beetle look and feel special + a hybrid= instant Prius and up-coming 2CV rival and beater.

Not having a new Beetle in the wings is another sign of how utterly stupid VW's thinking is. There should have been a new one 5 years ago.

I don't think VW is going to replace the Beetle with anything badged as a Beetle. From their past movements, they're going to replace with a 'spiritual' successor to the original; a small, fuel-efficient compact (e.g. the Up or some version of it).

DATSUN

I thought VW had already commented that there is a new Beetle in the works and that it would be aimed more at the Mini and offer more variants. I've even read that it was going to be more masculine with a lower roof line like that concept they released below.

And that would not surprise me given how clueless VW is about giving the NA market cars it wants to buy. The only reason New Beetle sales slowed down was that they let it stagnate. A spiritual successor would have to be dirt cheap and VW doesn't know how to do that.

Yeah and Volkswagen needs to realize a lot of people bought the New Beetle for the nostalgia. It's an important name for VW, and Americans really buy into name recognition. It would be idiotic to not rename their successor anything but Beetle.

The green one is quite nice. The red one doesn't evoke Beetle cues. It's an ugly graceless design that looks low-rent. The Beetle is a "discretionary" car meaning that like a Mini it will be bought mostly for style.

At first look, and if the image wasn´t posted at the Beetle thread, i would honestly say that it would look like a good interpretation of a new 2CV or Dyane.

I think it looks wrong, bad and ugly. A modern day Beetle should not just try to be a plastic interpretation to the classic but a step forward in both design, space and efficiency.

I'm sorry but you are wrong. I've never felt better and i am merely expressing my views. From the 100+ posts i write every week (just an over exaggeration mind you), some of them will inevitably be more positive and some more critical, judgmental. Now what was so irritable and cranky over expressing a similar view to swizzle and others over this car? Does it look good: no, it looks horrible IMO. Does it belong in the 2006 VW Beetle official thread? No, its merely a design done by someone outside of VW. Sorry if i annoyed you with my opinions man:confused:

I get the impression that VW is being handled by a bunch of senior-aged, white collar people who wouldn't know what's cool. Don't get me wrong, i sort of like some of the new VW's - the Touareg looks great in the metal - but there isn't even 1 model in their line-up that shows any kind of effort from their behalf to take a step forward or to truly appeal to a younger audience. In Europe VW sells because they have a good rep and there is the nostalgia thing going on (or should i say the "got used to buying them" routine), more or less akin to how the rest of the world keeps buying one dull Toyota after the other. Sticking a corporate grill on a Beetle would be the last act of stupidity IMHO. The Beetle should appeal to the Apple generation in terms of appeal, design, technology etc etc and not to just Barbie-loving girls and 60's nostalgia.
