they world premier in japan today.
This Grand vitara not a Equinox-based SUV or share theta platform with Equinox it's use all new suzuki platform with combi monocox and ladder frame together.
suzuki is planing to sell 50,000 Gv a years in u.s., all i can say is that a very very very very aggressive plan.
Does anyone know which month this GV will begin selling in America?

Oh yeah! Bring it on!
A HUGE improvement, nice shape, nice design, nice interiour - looks awesome. I don't like that from certain angles it looks a little similar to a Rav 4 but It's evidently an original design if you look better.

Interesting to see Suzuki's still using their own engines and platform.
Suzuki only sold something like 4300 Vitaras last year in the US...I just don't see how they'll suddenly do 10-fold the number of sales with this. Not that it's bad, but it is underpowered, and it's not like Suzuki has much in the way of name recognition in the auto sector.

You're right! I hadn't noticved the resemblance with the GC's rear lamps.
Its a mixture of several things, but I see more Rav than anything else. However, the end result does work. I would like to know more about the specs!
Fromt he picture in Japanese, it seems that there is a 2.7L version. I guess its the XL7's engine...

Very nice and very well done!!! Now it looks like it is competition to RAV4, CR-V, Escape, Tucson etc. I like it alot im sure it will sell pretty well in south america, i remember seeing lotsa vitaras down there!! and now with this one, theres no doubt there i gonna be way more.
Great job Suzuki.

This is nice... thats a tough looking mini-ute. It may have a Rav-4 like rear but the front and interior definately make up for it. The new Suzukis are looking really good. The new Swift, this, and then the new Verona (Chevy Evanda?) spypics look really good.. Suzuki is really trying to make advances in the industry.
The engines in this may not be the best but Suzukis usually sell for good prices. The current Vitara comes with a V6 standard for less than most other 4cyl SUVs. Also, I've read the V6 will be directly out of the current XL-7 rated at about 180hp which isn't that bad..
I really like the black interior ... i see the gc lamps too
i really like it... the mix of ladder frame and monoque is interesting, and should hopefully give it a decent on-road ride.
if suzuki is planning on reaching the sales goal in the us, then the one thing they need to do is call it "escudo" in the states instead of "vitara." that nameplate isn't strong, and come to think of it was just made up to get rid of "sidekick" anyway, so its not like any tradition they'd be getting rid of either.

This new Escudo looks like a real winner to me, somewhat like a RAV4 on steroids. I especially like the unibody-on-ladder-frame construction and a genuine 4WD system.
Plus, the fact that the engine is longitudinally mounted, and the transmission is right where it should be, makes this truck even more appealing to me.
For those who think this is just a RAV 4 clone, here are some stats. These are taken from the X2 Concept as compared to a RAV 4L with the optional larger tires. The numbers are presented as "Suzuki vs. Toyota":

Overall Length 176 inches vs. 167.5 inches
Overall Width 74.4 inches vs. 70.3 inches
Overall Height 66.7 inches vs. 65.7 inches
Wheelbase 103.9 inches vs. 98.0 inches
Tread 63.8 inches (front) vs. 60.0 inches
64.6 inches (rear) vs. 59.8 inches
Now, I just need to find out how roomy it is inside. If I can fit comfortably, I think we have a winner!

I see Nissan seats, Subaru steering wheel, RAV4 everywhere. Well, if you're gonna steal ideas, might as well steal from those having good luck with them. No way in hell do they sell that many though. Whoever set that estimate should be fired. Gradual increases people.

Suzuki hoping remodeled Grand Vitara SUV will lead North American sales push
Posted Date: 5/23/05
TOKYO - Suzuki Motor Corp. will launch a remodeled Grand Vitara near year end - adding a key element in its five-year plan to nearly triple North American sales.
The five-seat SUV with a 2.7-liter V-6 engine will offer a smoother ride than the current version by combining a monocoque body with a built-in ladder frame, Suzuki says.
The Grand Vitara also will feature full-time all-wheel drive.
The remodeled vehicle - 12 inches longer and 1.2 inches wider than the current version - will try to appeal mainly to men in their 30s and 40s, according to the automaker.
Suzuki expects the Grand Vitara to compete with the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V.
The automaker has set an annual Grand Vitara sales goal of 40,000 in North America.
That would help Suzuki reach its companywide sales goal of 250,000 units in North America in the fiscal year ending in March 2010.
In the fiscal year that ended March 31, the automaker sold 84,662 units in North America.
Suzuki has no plans to build the Grand Vitara in North America. Suzuki plans global sales of 125,000 of the redesigned SUV after it reaches all markets next year.
The model will arrive in Europe late this year or early next year with an annual sales goal of 60,000.
For the European version, Suzuki will procure a diesel engine from an undisclosed European automaker.
The current Grand Vitara sold in Europe has a diesel engine from PSA/Peugeot-Citroen.
In Japan, the 2.0-liter SUV, called the Escudo, went on sale Monday, May 16.
That model be followed by a 2.7-liter version in June.
The base model for Japan is priced at 1.94 million yen, or about $18,500 at current exchange rates.

source http://www.autoweek.com/news.cms?newsId=102429
125,000 vitara a year....
Can they do it ?
No, I don't think so.

Similar to Acura's keyless ignition, the car detects if the key is in your pocket. Why I say it is similar to Acura's rather then Infiniti's, Lexus's, or Cadillac's is that there is no push button you have to engage to start the car. You just have the usual turn "OFF/ACC/ON" know but without a slot to insert a key.

Is this Vitara going to offer fiat's multijet diesel engine? and which block they wiil use 150 bhp 1.9 Multijet or 2.4 lite 200 bhp?...........any info?
yeah Suzuki will use Fiat's Multijet, and i think it'll be the 1.9 ltr version, which for Suzuki is great news as Fiats range of multijet engines are probably some of the best diesel engines on the market
I think the new Vitara looks great, they've hit a winner here, hope the Fiat version looks as good!

This isn't the car that Fiat will get a version of. They will share a smaller/lower "crossover" vehicle. There should be some pics in the spy shot section.

Hey guys, within the last 2 weeks i've seen 2 Suzuki Vitaras on the streets, with number plates and all, in my city in Limassol,Cyprus. They weren't the Grand Vitara, just the regular 2 door ones..and no mistake, they were the new ones!Which i find it confusing:how is that possible when most people are still just speculating about it, and here ive seen 2 of the in the metal? In my country, even though it is Europe,we get A LOT of cars imported from Japan, most of them are under one year old(second hand) so it is not uncommon to get cars here before the rest of the continent. For example we had cars like the RX-8 or Mitsubishi Colt months before other EU countries. But still, seeing the Vitara got me puzzled.Anyway, it is a very handsome car, nicely proportioned, elegant, simple and sporty...but seeing it has confermed that it looks remarkably like a RAV-4.It does have some Suzuki character in it,yet still it looks like an evolutionary design to the RAV-4.

I just got back from the Mazda dealer. We went there to see the MX-5 they had in, but ended up heading to the Suzuki dealer next door just to see the Forenza wagons. They had a row of the Grand Vitaras there though so I had a look. Overall they looked good, the exterior styling was nice and the interior looked pretty good, but I expected the price to be a little less. Unfortunately they were all locked though, so I can't say much about the interior. All and all it looks like they have a good product, the price was just a little higher than I would expect to pay.

No 7 seater is planned(for NA atleast). The XL-7 replacement won't be a stretched Vitara anymore, it will be based on a stretched Theta platform and will be positioned better against the Highlander, Pilot, and Murano. It will be based on the Suzuki Concept X from earlier this year featuring available 3-row seats again and a 3.6l V6(currently found in the CTS/SRX/STS) good for about 250hp. Should be something to look foward to from the company.

Yes, I think the new Suzuki looks to be a promising SUV. It's got clean looks and a very upscale interior for its class. Anyone shopping for a small SUV with a V6 should certianly put this on top of their list. I think this is a great alternative to the Ford Escape V6 or the Chevy Equinox and I believe Suzuki's got a great warranty too. Way to go Suzuki..

I got to check one out at the dealer. They had a bunch of them in stock. Probably 10-12. Only one was unlocked, and it was a stick. The clutch felt firm, but not overly firm and the shifter throws were pretty tight for an SUV, better than the manual Escape. The quality felt good on the plastics. About on par with a Mazda3. And for the segment, the EPA ratings weren't too bad, but they weren't great either. All in all for the price, this one could be the one to beat. Unless a third row is the most important thing for you.

uzuki's Grand Plans!!!
15 September, 2005
Suzuki Motor Corporation has good reason to celebrate following the positive reviews and successful sales of the third generation compact SUV, the New Grand Vitara.
Released into the Australian, North American and European markets earlier this month, the bold and rugged good looks of the new Grand Vitara along with its proven off road abilities have created high demand for the vehicle.
Launched into the Japanese domestic market in May of this year, under the name Escudo, Suzuki originally set a sales target of 120,000 units worldwide.
The overwhelming response to the vehicle has seen Suzuki increase the worldwide sales target by 40% to 180,000 units, this includes a 50% increase to 165,000 units for Japan, 30,000units in North America and 50,000 units for Europe, which are both a 30% increase on the original target.
The new Grand Vitara is manufactured and produced in Japan and is exported to South America, Europe, North America and Australia.
Suzuki Australia is also very confident in the package the new Grand Vitara offers and have set an annual sales target of 5,500 units.

I 've read from http://drive.com.au

Just back from Frankfurt and I'm just as confused.

2 staff on the stand said a Diesel Automatic WAS coming 2 quarter 2006 and 2 said it would NOT be coming.
So still don't know for sure. One of the ones that said it was coming said "we (Suzuki) have sold a lot of Diesel Auto GV's in the past and we don't want to hand these customers to the opposition when they come to change" -- which makes sense. So its wait and see.
it's full time 4wd !!!!! hahaha

the l4 2.4 liter code J24b intall in the MC Grand vitara
as i see from the spec i would say that this engine
is competitive .not like the old 2.0 liter which i can see
some disadvancetage.

expect in US. and europe later this year
it's come just in time for the increasing competion
in the compact SUV range.

The new engines are much needed and should make the Vitara way more competitive. I wonder how the fuel mileage is now?

THE NEW V6 3.2 LITER IS SAME fuel mileage AS IT'S OLD V6 2.7 ONES.
AND THE NEW L4 2.4L. IS NEARLY SAME AS THE OLD 2.0 ONES.

Next stop: special editions of special editions. How very postmodern.

Japanese prefer new products all the time, cars included. That's why Japanese car makers offer so many different models in the JDM, and they live on shorter life cycles with more frequent facelifts plus having more special editions.

because the radio is already built in the different TV and netvigation systems available to buyers as options.

Interesting.

here japanese customers dont want just a "radio".
perhaps a hdd sat nav combined with a dvd changer and a digital tv system plus wireless ipod and phone connection would be a good start.
and since those gadgets are offered from various brands, a "no-radio standard equipment" is rather welcome ...

I haven't heard that.

Suzuki in my opinion is a little like Mazda...great, bullet proof cars, that handle very well - but nobody knows about them.

In MY humblest of opinions - Suzuki needs to:
- Get back to their roots. Bring back a Samurai type rig, cheap, dependable, etc. The rollovers obviously (which massively overblown) need to be addressed.
- Morph that car into a 'halo' car - make a dune buggy out of it...a quirky car, that looks cool and is cheap.
These two alone would bring folks into the dealerships.

Then come out with Civic/Mazda/Focus/Elantra competitor - that doesn't look like ass. Have a high performance version.

Re-introduce folks to the brand, get them coming in young - then keep them.
