View Full Version : 2006 Acura EL/CSX?

i heard from a forum member on autoweek.com that the acura el, which is only sold in canada, is scheduled to release a redesigned version by that fall. rumor has it that the new el, which could change its name to something along the lines of "csx," might also be sold in the U.S. with a 1.8 litre 140-hp engine. has anyone heard similar rumors circulating around or know other things about the new el?
also, if the new el does come to the u.s., do you think its a good move? why or why not?
also, here is the link for info on the acura el: http://www.acura.ca/AcuraEng/Models/EL/InfoNav.htm. yes, its basically a civic clone with some more luxurious amenities, so hopefully the new one will differentiate itself from the civic and move a bit more upscale. (hopefully a larger engine!)

I haven't heard anything about this coming to the US. I think it would probably be a mistake though, I doubt many people would want an upscale Civic. Who knows though. I've seen one of these down here, it was nothing special.

Since the Civic is due for replacement soon, it would make sense for the EL to be replaced as well. It is getting rather long in the tooth.
Also, it pretty much has the luxury small car market to itself here in Canada, at least until we get the 1 Series and the B Class.
The closest anything else in Canada comes is the A3, and it starts about $9K above the EL.

05-08-2005, 12:48 PM
well since this Acura EL/CSX is getting its redisign and might be coming to the US. I see the reason why there have been rumors of Acura droppint the RSX from its lineup. Hopefully it wont be the same as the 2006 Civic, so that when it comes to the US it wont be a supped up Civic.

05-09-2005, 07:58 AM
CSX sounds to mutch like a caddy ... if you ask me..
but honda.. sorry acura need a replasment for the RSX now that there killing it off..

05-09-2005, 04:40 PM
I highly doubt the EL/CSX would come to the United States - there just doesn't seem to be a market for it. There's barely a market for the subcompact luxury car category (TSX, S40, etc.) as it is.
Besides, isn't the TSX supposed to receive the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine from the upcoming RDX?

05-09-2005, 05:52 PM
Fromwhat I've heard the TSX will be the cheapest model in the line-up for now. The RSX wasn't a profitable car so I highly doubt that the EL will be available in the US ever...
I would think the smartest thing for Acura would be a TSX coupe, it would be a cheaper model but not too cheap where it would lower the brands newer image.

05-10-2005, 01:28 PM
I can confirm there is no Acura EL coming to the US. Civic will move slightly upmarket with more amenities and increased refinement and the TSX will assume the entry spot for Acura in the next two years.
Honda will begin to pick up Acura's entry point (RSX) with new Si coupe which will offer better performance than the Type-S model for less money. Given the softness of the coupe market and the huge potential for a legitimate sports sedan at that price point, a four-door version of the Si will follow.
There is no plan for a TSX coupe given the extremely small sales potential. Acura is moving slowly upmarket in the US and they feel that the TSX is the ideal balance of luxury entry point and sales volume for the brand.

05-10-2005, 02:48 PM
Well, IF (I know what was said above) IF it comes to the United States, it better not have the Name CSX
I think CSX runs in Canada too, so the name "CSX" wouldn't be good for a small sporty luxury car anyway
(CSX is a North American Freight Train Operator)

Not sure if this is the thread to do this, but this is the only CSX thread I could find. Move the post if this is the wrong place.
Did this really quickly. Frequent visitor, first time poster. Everyone's been saying the CSX will basically be the JPN Civic, so I took the liberty and modified a pic to see what it could look like.
Changed the emblem and added TSX wheels. I hope you're all right and Acura isn't wasting time with these lower end models....What they do need is to bring the CL back and maybe it can give the G coupe a run for its money like the TL is doing to the sedan (sorry i kidna have a 1 track mind)

10-11-2005, 08:42 PM
There is definitely a gap in the Acura lineup and in order for them to play with the big dogs, they've gotta offer a nice mid-size coupe with good power. Maybe, a joint venture with the next S2000 (Solves the RWD problem), but instead a folding hardtop? It definitely has to be a 2+2 though. I think this combo combines the missing segments Acura is losing out on and I really think it could fit well in the lineup (Between TSX/TL and RL).
Back on topic though, as a Canadian, I actually prefer having a lower end car in the Acura line up. I don't think it has created any problems with the Acura image here in Canada. Not sure if this will also be the case in the US.

From the front, that looks very Acura, actually. If they could do a bit more to differenitate the interiors, I could see justification to bring it to the US. Especially since it has a more powerful powerplant, IIRC.

They have it in Canada because we buy more small cars. I doubt it would ever go to the States because it would be redundant. It is here, but it's a way of drawing people into Acura showrooms.

10-19-2005, 08:45 AM
I remember while looking at used cars the EL is rebadged inside. Also - from the sneak on the site it looks very much like the JDM Civic, but expect them to also ad on ground effects kits, spoilers and ritcier rims eventually to make it more up market.
As for what makes them different, they do have different content or at least unique packages. And for people buying used cars, ELs are worth considering as it seems they usually are on par with prices of used Civics. And for us Canadians, Civics are so common it's nice to have something a little different.
I'd never buy one new though - I couldn't justify the price difference.

Looks good... but EL has always looked better than the US 4dr Civic. This is supposedly powered by the 2.0l in the base RSX, producing 155hp. A very well rounded package.

11-03-2005, 03:41 PM
They do sell Civic's in Canada. However, this one has the previous base RSX engine, so it has a bit more power than the Civic EX. Also, with the previous generation Civic in Canada, you could not get VTEC (until 2004), but could with the EL for the entire life cycle. Plus automatic climate control, available only on the hybrid Civic, and not at all on the previous generation except as the EL is standard. They aren't a whole lot more than a standard Civic, IIRC and you get the Acura dealership treatment. So while the differences are minor, they can still be justified. Sort of.

huh what was so funny about that?

11-03-2005, 04:30 PM
I can't explain why I find this car so interesting. It's still appealing though, especially with the current price of fuel. You get a nice economical package, good fuel economy, Honda reliability, Acura dealer treatment, with just the right amount of luxury amenities, and a package that's just different enough to stand out from the crowd of 300,000 Civics they'll be selling per year. I actually hope they sell it in the US. After all, if Audi can give us the Golf in fancy duds A3, ditto BMW with the 1-series and Mercedes with the A-class, and Volvo too with the S40, why can't Acura?

11-03-2005, 05:46 PM
They could've at leat tried to differentiate the interior from that of the normal Civic... like adding fake wood trim or SOMETHING... X__X

Hey, it get's the three spoke wheel that is only on the coupe. Plus it has different lighting, including lighted steering wheel controls. i think i might have an idea. rebadge a civic si as an rsx and bring it to the states, but with a more powerful engine and more stuff to make it differ from the civic. also, for a spec version or a type s, produce the v8 for that also. that would rock.

11-03-2005, 09:49 PM
The Acura CSX appears to be similar to the top of the line ASEAN Civic 2.0 Si sedan.
The ASEAN Civic is the only Civic sedan with an optional 155 hp 2.0 liter engine.
