Much better improved car than orginal Vel Satis because it was ugly.

To me the front is definitely better, even with only those subtle changes. The problem with this car, and that cannot be solved, is that the roof is too tall with respect the belt line and the rear glass/boot shape.
It uses the same i-drive style controls than the facelifted Laguna.

We can only hope that Renault has enough sense not to inflict this level of "style" on the Nissans sold in the USA.

No restyling could ever undo the Vel Satis awkward shape. Still, i thought that they would change the front more. I always found it to be very inconsistent with the roundness of the rear, but i guess the investment wasn't worth it...

However, when the product lacks other desireable qualities or valid alternatives exist, people tend to see the design for what it is (regardless of what designers and artists claim), which is poor styling. I'm sorry, but as with the styling of recent bavarian vehicles this is another case of the emperor wearing no clothes.

Quote, originally posted by Krypton »

didnt we have a member that claimed he was driving this

Yeah he was 13 years old and loved to pollute the forum with false claims. I miss the old grille, but other than that I like it. I don't think this car is a beauty to anyone the first time they see it, but it grows on you. I do think the back of the Megane is much better executed, however there is more interplay going on with the lines there.

Well I guess that the AMC Pacer & Gremlin are by o means the ugliest cars ever made now twice over!!!!!

Now, IMO the Toledo closely follows the Vel Saltis in ugliness!

you totally misread that. what I was trying to say is that poor styling or design is poor styling or design no matter what brand name it wears or what snobby "artists" or marketing people say. I find this to be especially true when those very people use the argument that "you just don't understand", as if by "understanding" would suddenly make the design appealing to consumers (who BTW are the target for purchasing these designs).
My point is that people sometimes overlook design deficiencies, because the product has other qualities that make it appealing. For example, as with BMW's recent crop of vehicles, there are quite a few people who are not thrilled with the styling direction BMW has taken, but who would none-the-less purchase one, because of BMW's high fun-to-drive ratio, relative high quality, and perception of status. The velsatis lacks enough strong alternate apealing features to get consumers to look past it's styling akwardness. BTW, this applies to many products, not just cars.

Now I am not so sure that this car does not have any qualities, Iam pretty confinced that either consumers don`t understand the product, or it`s just ahead of it`s time. True the car isn`t a racer like a BMW or an Audi, it is more a comfort car like a Mercedes, with a lot more room and and a smaller price. A Mercedes still looks fast, even its more a comforter, the VelSatis doesn`t look fast, it looks like a comfortable car, I think thats why peole don`t want to buy it, because it`s styling really tells you a lot about the product your buying. Also I guess that most people don`t want a car they relate with a trait that is associated with old people, being relaxed and wanting as much comfort and peace of mind as possible. My oppinion, the car is great inside and very nice to drive if you want a cruiser, plus it really gives you a feeling of saveness, with the high driving position, but since people don`t like it, one cant buy it, cause you will never get rid of it without loosing money like crazy, too bad and nice try Renault

Change that rear!
What's with that unstylish rear??? I don't get it.
If their using the Nissan-Renault C Platform, then how come they can't do the rear correctly?

I mean, if you compare this to a Nissan Tiida Sport hatchback, which car would have the better rear?
Perhaps not just the rear but the overall exterior design. Which car would look better?

Platform has nothing to do with design.
Besides, Vel Satis doesnt use the c-platform
