But cos there is a pretty big price rise on this Focus, with the new found qualtiy, and i think Ford just wants this cheap car on sale. I supose Fords idea is, if we can keep this car on sale for a while, we will contine to make money of the old platform, and when people realise there is a new one, we will start selling it. And by then they will be so up them selfs, homeless and up to their heads in debt.

Shomare
02-14-2005, 07:08 PM
Ford is having a hard time selling the Focus. Focus enthusiast have had it with them and as such they have damaged their chance of taking a chunk out of Honda and others by not keeping the Focus fresh and competitive.
The new Civic will take a lot of sales back from Ford and with a 200 bhp motor from Honda, the civic wont be able to keep pace.
I have also heard that the next Focus will be a reskin on the same platform.
I think if you want a C1 Focus you should go buy a Mazda 3 or wait for the Volvo C30

PERFORMANCE FOCUS FOR FORD AT GENEVA
Over the years, Ford has earned a special place in the hearts of European performance enthusiasts. Well be demonstrating at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show that the Blue Ovals performance story is continuing. With our preview of the exciting new Focus ST, with our renewed commitment to motorsport through the FIA World Rally Championship, with the recently-launched Fiesta ST and with more Geneva news, our commitment to enthusiasts lives on with passion and pride as we enter an exciting new chapter.
PREVIEWING THE NEW FOCUS ST
Addictive performance derivative will join the Focus range before year end
In Brief:
Exciting all-new ST (Sport Technologies) Focus due towards the end of 2005
Turbocharged Duratec ST 2.5-litre 5-cylinder engine will deliver around 220PS
Head-turning design signals sporting intent, but Focus ST remains practical for everyday use
Sporty interior communicates purpose and emotion
New Focus provides a strong base for performance road cars, competition models
Quicker to market than previous generation ST thanks to Ford Team RS and the 'shared technolgies' global engineering strategy
Previewing an exciting new performance model the new Focus ST Ford is demonstrating to performance enthusiasts they dont have long to wait for another special model from Ford Team RS. The new Focus ST sporting around 220PS and finished in brilliant orange for its Geneva preview will be introduced towards the end of 2005.
Powered by a turbocharged Duratec ST 2.5-litre, 5-cylinder engine and equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox, the Focus ST promises, in its specification and its distinctive design features, to raise the new Focuss reputation as a drivers car to new heights.
When performance enthusiasts see this car, they are going to have high expectations. The Focus ST is going to live up to them, said Jost Capito, who heads Fords racing and performance arm, Ford Team RS. This car looks fast from its design, and every functional attribute is being engineered to deliver on that expectation.
Focus STs stance low-profile 225/40 performance tyres on sculpted 18x8-inch five-spoke cast aluminium wheels speaks driving confidence and grip. Inside and out, Focus STs design makes its performance attributes clear, but in a manner that also supports refinement, craftsmanship and practicality. Focus ST remains a comfortable car for everyday family driving.
The new Focus was engineered to provide a flexible base for derivatives and is especially suited to performance models, said Derrick Kuzak, Vice President, Product Development, Ford of Europe. Focus ST embodies the ethos of what our Sport Technologies brand stands for: a great-to-drive product that is visually differentiated from the rest of the model range and appeals to performance enthusiasts without losing sight of its everyday practicality and accessibility to own and insure.
Together with the recently introduced Fiesta ST model and the acclaimed Mondeo ST220, the new Focus ST epitomises the sporty attributes Ford ST models stand for: extending the strengths of their core models and enjoying clear differentiation from rally car inspired RS derivatives.
We created the Focus ST using the same principles as the Fiesta ST, delivering sporting credentials with full family capability, Capito said. It will have performance and handling attributes like those we delivered in the original Focus RS, but will be a truly civilised all-rounder. . Our test drivers are having a lot of fun with it at the Nrburgring -- ocus ST should appeal to everybody who loves cars.
Previewing the ST model so early in the product cycle demonstrates Fords commitment to performance derivatives and building the ST brand, according to Geoff Polites, Ford of Europes Vice President of Marketing, Sales and Service.
Were serious about extending the ST family under the halo effect of our renewed commitment with Focus in the World Rally Championship, Polites said.
Strong Visual Performance Appeal
Focus ST communicates an athletic air toned, taut and balanced with refined sports styling outside and a stylishly purposeful yet comfortable driver-oriented environment inside.
Focus is ideally suited to performance derivatives, said Chris Clements, Chief Designer, Ford Team RS. With its fast silhouette as a starting point, we added distinctive design cues to communicate its more overt sporting characteristics. The result is a design that begs to be driven.
Designers evolved certain design cues established on the Fiesta ST to communicate Fords competition heritage. They re-emphasised the visual weight of the front bumper to give Focus ST a low centre of gravity and incorporated an aggressive inverted-trapezoid lower grille. The upper grille of Focus ST is taller and narrower than that of core Focus models. Both upper and lower grilles feature a graphite mesh with signature triangular pattern hinting at mechanical power.
Flanking the top of the lower grille, foglamp openings are trimmed in brushed aluminium. At the rear, reversing and rear foglamp features are given similar design treatment, while the lower bumper has been sculpted to create a visual venturi effect from which the chrome-tipped dual sport exhausts emerge.
Specially shaped sill mouldings aligned with the chin of the front bumper further communicate the low centre of gravity and agility of the Focus ST. Attention to detail the special ST badge on the front wings and performance the highly sculpted, five-spoke, 18-inch wheels communicate dynamism.
Focus ST also sports a more purposeful tailgate spoiler. Shaped for both aerodynamic and visual effect, the spoiler extends beyond the width of the tailgate to just above the high-mounted tail lamps of the Focus.
We needed extra width for increased aerodynamic functionality, so we floated the spoiler over the lamps, Clements said.
Details like the spoiler, plus door handles, mirrors and body side mouldings, are all finished in the insistent, spirited bright orange that is destined to become a signature colour for the first new Focus performance derivative.
Interior of an enthusiasts Focus
The interior design of the new Focus ST also plays a role in communicating its sporting credentials. Even from the outside, Focus STs unique additional instrument pod, incorporated atop the upper instrument panel, creates an immediate visual difference.
The additional instrument pod is one of several special design features inside Focus ST. Under its half-dome eyebrow shape, a trio of instruments turbocharger boost pressure, oil temperature and oil pressure are grouped. These new gauges, as well as the 160-mph speedometer, rev counter, temperature and fuel gauges in the primary instrument cluster, are given a new graphic design deeply ringed in aluminium opal colour to match other brushed aluminium interior accents.
Focus STs black headliner and A-pillars give the interior a dark, purposeful intent, giving the Focus ST a jet fighter cockpit feeling.
These details are normally only found in the premium segment, said Narendra Karadia, Focus ST interior designer. It creates an interesting feeling, making the driver acutely aware of the outside.
The leather-wrapped steering wheel has increased rim section with bold thumb grips and three brushed aluminium-finished spokes. The bold red ST logo is engraved into the centre spoke.
Focus STs leather trimmed, brushed aluminium gear knob also features a red six- speed gate graphic.
Focus ST is fitted with special sport driver and passenger seats trimmed in a combination of leather and grippy orange cloth to provide optimal lateral support during spirited driving. Matching leather inserts differentiate the interior door panels and complement special brushed aluminium ST door pull sills.
Other aluminium details inside Focus ST are its purpose-designed performance pedals with rubber pads set in cast aluminium and its unique ST scuff plate finish panels.
Quick to market from Ford Team RS
Expected within a year of the introduction of the mainstream Focus family, the new Focus ST is quicker to market than previous ST models. It is one of the key benefits from the formation of Ford Team RS, according to Capito.
Faster delivery time is one of the synergies that have resulted from combining Ford of Europes motorsport and performance car engineering teams, Capito said.
In the past, ST models came in the middle of a product cycle. Now were aligned with the design, vehicle dynamics and powertrain functions to better integrate performance derivative development and take fuller advantage of the vast array of resources made possible by Fords global shared technologies approach.
Full technical details of the new Ford Focus ST will be revealed closer to its launch towards the end of 2005.

Can't say I'm over-enamoured with the metal-surround plastic reflector inserts in the rear bumper. I can appreciate the designer's quest for continuity but these things look out of place, contributing to an unnecessarily fussy rear-end.
Other than that, I fairly nice effort from Ford that ought to take the fight to the VXR, GTI and Megane Sport. I expect that it will eclipse all of them in the handling stakes too...
But... ahem, is it more special than a GTI? Not in my books it isn't.
[I do like the inclusion of a boost guage, hopefully VW will add one during the ongoing minor improvements to GTI.]

This is what is says in the Ford Australia website about the Focus XR5:
The German engineered Ford Focus XR5 Turbo is on its way and will hit the streets early in 2006. And its a car youll want to drive. Boasting a turbocharged Duratec 2.5 litre 5-cylinder engine that delivers smooth power, the Focus XR5 Turbo sounds as good as it looks.
Why Duratec engine?Wont it use the Volvo unit like the euro Focus??Anyone has any specs on how the Duratec 2.5 engine will work??
AM2K

I am very very sure that the Duratec engine is the Volvo engine.
The ST engine is based off the 5-cylinder Turbocharged unit sourced from Volvo, but has been modified to suit the Focus a bit more. Because of this, its been named as a Duratec engine. Plus its a bit weird putting on the specs that the focus uses a Volvo engine.
All press releases refer to this as the Duratec engine. Its based off the Volvo engine, ford will not refer to it as that. This is from the UK Press Release:
Standard specification includes a characterful 2.5-litre Duratec five-cylinder 20-valve turbocharged engine developing 225PS at 6,100rpm and 320Nm of torque at just 1,600rpm

Yeah u are right, thanks for clearing that up mate. Silly from Ford though, EVERYONE knows its using the Volvo T5 engine so why conceal it as a duratec...Anyway, it will also be interesting to see if Ford Australia gives the XR5 some different styling as well, should be interesting

I hate you Ford. I don't really like the reflectors in the bumper, but thats such a minor quibble I don't even care. I know I would hate seeing all the people in this area who would get them, because they would be the type who annoy me anyway, but if this was coming to the US, I could see myself looking at one in a few years.

Personally i liked the HSV Astra VXR better... BUT the Nissan Tiida Sports Concept was THE best Hot Hatch (Concept or Production) there

The 5-door MK2 usually does look better than the 2-door High probability that Ford Aus will only opt for the 5-door right? Since 5-doors make more sense for the Aussie markets plus the XR6 and XR8 are both non-coupes. Still, 3 or 5 this will be great for the Focus image.

That is soo mad Aussie sports version of Focus. That has much better looks than normal forcus hatchback, i hope it would bring the sedan version as well.

Well our Focus models are sourced from Africa, and they only make the sedan and 5 door hatch. To import the 3 door would mean to source it from Europe somewhere, and even then there would be a premium price? I dont think its worth it.
I want a Fiesta XR4!!!

CosworthKid
10-14-2005, 12:26 PM
Hehe, Fiesta XR4, Focus XR5, Falcon XR6, Falcon XR8...finally the Aussie line-up sounds like a normal family!Still not sure whether XR5 will suit the car for next generations but still sounds cool and probably make a much bigger impact than have it named ST which sounds alien in the Aussie line up. So i guess an XR4 Fiesta is a dead cert

CosworthKid

Would be nice, but since the Astra OPC/VXR will be sold as an HSV and the ST(XR5) as a normal Ford maybe there is not a market for an even sportier and more expensive FPV version since that would probably make it as expencive as an FPV Typhoon right??Maybe if Ford ever decides to go ahead with the Focus RS

I personally think branding that Astra as a HSV will bring down the brand, thats just my opinion. The Astra is rumored to cost $43,000 australia, any word on pricing on the Focus XR-5?

Does anyone even know what 'XR' actually means? Does it hold any significance, or is it just two letters from the alphabet picked randomly?

ST stands for Sport Technologies, Ford of Europe's equivalent of the currently invisible U.S.-market Special Vehicle Team (SVT). This vehicle is the first performance derivative of the new-for-everywhere (except North America) Focus, and effectively replaces the old Focus RS. It is powered by a 217-hp, turbocharged, 2.5-liter in-line five-cylinder engine (borrowed from Volvo, whose S40 chares the same corporate C1 platform) that is hooked up to a six-speed manual trannie. Typically, it also features an aggressive bodykit, larger eighteen-inch wheels and tires, sport seats, a special instrument cluster that incorporates a turbo boost gauge, and a tuned sport suspension. Don't expect anything this cool from Ford in this market segment to make it to the U.S.--ever.
http://www.automobilemag.com/a..._euro/

I'm not sure whether XR stands for anything, but does anyone remember the other XR8?
In the mid-80s, Ford of South Africa sold a 5.0 litre Sierra XR8 which was probably a hoot to drive:

This morning i received an official Ford Focus ST brochure in my mail, after request. It looks brilliant, especially in orange and blue colours. It comes in three trims here in UK, ST-1,ST-2 & ST-3. The ST-3 comes with full leather recarros in front and a special sculptured full leather recaro bench at the back which only sits 2 but is full-on racing stuff!Plus they all have what Ford calls Submarine Lighting which basically light the front console with a nice red light when dark. U can even concentrate 2 red beams on the gearlever so it looks more perposeful and adds to the drama. Prices, in UK, start at 17,267 for ST-1 3door and rise to 19,267 for top spec ST-3 in 3door. 5-doors see a slight increase in price as in normal models.
