I love the Mazda 3, but why do we need this? It is selling well over expectations, i mean, yeah for me its a good car, buy why?

To make it look more 'upmarket' so to speak. Mazda really wants to make people see that this is a genuine competitor to the Golf and the A3, and what better way to do that if they add some more 'european' luxuries such as leather?
I love that interior - for some reason brown leather looks cool.

For 21,545 dollars it is a bargain. The sales manager said that this was a marketing test to see if Mazda will make this a regular option package for 06. He said that there would not be very many of them and that delevery of the rest of them had been held up because of the mudslides in Calif. That they were on the transport ship waiting to be unloaded and that all the ones on the ship were all that are going to be available.

I would not mind spending my daily commutes in that interior, especially for just a little over 21K. See, you can offer luxury touches like these without thinking you're automatically a luxury car maker **cough**VW**cough**. Hope this doesn't go to their heads and the next concept we see from Mazda is a Phaeton clone.

whoa the leather color is similar to the King Ranch, its pretty classy for a small car :)

Auto wipers are an option on the normal one... I'm looking at getting one eventually.

It is a matter of personal taste. A car with all those features in the compact class at that price comparing the 3 to a loaded Civic or Corolla I will take the 3 anyday. I haven't seen a 06 Sonata in person so I won't comment on something I haven't seen in the metal. The Sonata is a nice car no doubt but I will waite till I see the car and have a chance to test drive one.

Its too expensive if you ask me - certainly not comparable to Corolla or Civic prices (of course you cant find them in the US so equipped anyway).
But then again, comparing everything with Sonata is really...

look at the window sticker on the car. The one I took photos of had 2300.00 in options. If you don't want hid headlamps, side airbags side curtain airbags or a sunroof 18685. for a car with leather heated seats 6 disc changer and Bose speakers IS a bargain. I would definantly want this over a Honda Civic of which you can't get leather or a Bose system on. So to me this is still a bargain at 21,500.

Is it just me or does the interior of the Austrailian market cars seats look more brown than the American market version I took photos of?

I have no bias toward Hyundai, in fact, I like most imports, I currently drive a Toyota Solara, and just got my mom a TL two months ago (don't even own a Hyundai) although I am thinking about adding a sedan in addition to my current coupe, I'd like to take a test drive of the Sonata this spring and see if I can take delivery
Back to topic...you are right, it might not be a fair comparison but I still it's way to expensive...I'm just not sure how many people would spend 22k to buy a compact car, for that much money, you can certainly move up to the midsize class. I am just not getting the point why Mazda is doing this, the luxury factor is there, I agree, but there is not value at all if that car is priced at 22k msrp

Thing is, you can't get most midsize cars with all the stuff you get in this 3 for 22K, except maybe the Sonata as knicks125 pointed out. So you have 22K to spend, do you buy size and not a lot of features, or do you buy all the luxury features in a more compact body. To get both, you usually end up treading in the entry-luxury class. Guess it depends on what you're after.

It's more comparable to the upcoming Audi A3 Sportback. That car will start at 25K without leather, sunroof, or premium audio. The SP23 incorporates all the luxury features of more expensive cars in a very attractive and reliable package for a reasonable price.

Well then I guess i'm the only one who's not willing to pay 22k or more for a compact car, perhaps b/c I only paid 22K to get my Solara, SLE version (top trim). I just can't comprehend how anyone would drop over 22k or more to buy a compact car, to me, luxury doesn't save lives, safety features such as ABS, EPS, traction control do, so I guess luxury is that last thing on my list. What I am saying is that I would rather get the regular 3 and put the rest of the money in my pocket to spend for another day, or take that 22k and get the 6. If they didn't added the DVD Nav system for free on my car, I would never get it, it's useless.
By the way, I do like both of these cars, it's just that 22k seems a bit much on the 3, sort of like it's a bit much on the jetta - although jetta is a pretty sweet car.
