Lexus Enhances Hot-Selling RX 330 in 2005 with Special Edition
January 9, 2005 -- Detroit, MI -- Lexus introduced a special edition of the best-selling RX 330 luxury utility vehicle called Thundercloud Edition today at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.
Although, the RX 330 continues to lead the luxury SUV field in sales, the new Thundercloud Edition adds another dimension to the lineup with several enhancements designed to give customers an attractive new choice.
A rich gray metallic color known as Thundercloud Metallic graces the special edition and is matched with light gray interior with leather-trimmed seats and black birdⳠeye maple wood trim. Flint Mica is also available as an alternative exterior color.
The grille lends an elegant look with chrome horizontal bars that convey its connection to other Lexus models. "Thundercloud" badges on the front doors and floor mats identify this special edition. New five-spoke aluminum alloy wheels with contrasting rings complete the package with fresh details.
All Thundercloud Edition RX 330s are available with performance, luxury and convenience features found in the standard RX 330, including the Adaptive Front lighting System (AFS), Mark Levinson audio, rear seat DVD entertainment system and more.
Vehicles will be available in dealers in late January 2005, with a planned volume of 6,500 units. The special edition price will start at $300 above the base MSRP of $35,775 for the two-wheel drive model, and $37,175 for the all-wheel drive model.

http://i.tnpv.us/2005/WKA20050...v.jpg

http://i.tnpv.us/2005/WKA20050...v.jpg

http://i.tnpv.us/2005/WKA20050...v.jpg

http://i.tnpv.us/2005/WKA20050...v.jpg

http://i.tnpv.us/2005/WKA20050...v.jpg

http://i.tnpv.us/2005/WKA20050...v.jpg

http://i.tnpv.us/2005/WKA20050...v.jpg

http://i.tnpv.us/2005/WKA20050...v.jpg

http://i.tnpv.us/2005/WKA20050...v.jpg

http://i.tnpv.us/2005/WKA20050...v.jpg

http://i.tnpv.us/2005/WKA20050...v.jpg

http://i.tnpv.us/2005/WKA20050...v.jpg

http://i.tnpv.us/2005/WKA20050...v.jpg
Source: http://www.AutoDeadLine.com

My question is this: if the RX sells so well as it is, why does Lexus feel the need to tack on some really not-so-cool rims and embroider the floor mats for a special edition? This is a mommy-mobile, and I don't think prospective customers are going to be enticed by the name Thundercloud. This isn't a Chevy Silverado.

What is the point of this thing? So idiots go into the showroom, see limited edition and think, ah hot damn, I better buy it. Even if I were in the market for the RX, I wouldn't get this, you'd have to be mental, and lexus most likely knows that. Just get the regular version and save some cash.

IMO, toyota wanted make some changes to attract even more customers but thought it was not worthwhile to make a new version of the RX just yet, so they threw on some new spinners, plus other unnoticeable minor mods, and a new name so they can charge a little bit more in its prices.
Not sure what the forecast is for the thundercloud edition (actually to me there's nothing thundercloud about this car), we'll just have to wait and see how this one does. Toyota should be careful with this one, it may backfire on them.

I am not really sure why my best guess would be in my previous post...you're right...I didn't even think about it, the hybrid is coming soon (I think in April)...not sure where this edition would fit in the RX lineup...maybe just a publicity stunt , as there won't be many thundercloud editions made

The RX is a fine vehicle and I realize it sells well. And fine, a special edition makes sense enough to me.
I just don't get why they had to give it a name more suited to an Indian Chief or a pro wrestler, and then continue to strip it of anything "special" by giving it merely [ugly] new rims and embroidered floor mats?
It's like a girl getting a tattoo on her lower back. Completely clich and more or less classless.

I have never liked the RX, it is a vehicle that excells at nothing. It has no soul and no capeability. Its like driving a big marshmallow around. I am surprised they have been able to push this fancy highlander for so long with no major revisions. I have never been a big crossover fan, but MDX, toureg, and XC90 are so much more visceral to drive if you want to find a grocery-lot hip 'suv' to lease for 3 years.

That will be the only time I see the word "visceral" used in the same sentence with any of those vehicles. A moment to remember.
And as for the comment that the RX excels at nothing, that's discounting the fact that it has consistently higher quality ratings than anything in its class, and that kickin' Mark Levinson sound system. And despite being pretty underwhelming, it's got some fun hi-tech touches, like the adaptive headlights, air suspension, and so on.
I think the real crime here is merely the fact that they want to parade this half-assed attempt at a special edition as something new and exciting.

RX330 consistantly rates better than the rest, or at worse still at the top of the field... In fact, it is an rare American model that gets rave reviews in Europe. It is an awesome car... Doing something about it when your model is old and starts losing sales (Golf R32 anyone?) is too little, too late.
I bet this new interior trim will go into facelifted model in 2006, together with that new engine. Most benz models such as C class, A class, and ML leave so much to be desired in terms of materials used. Even the new ML's interior looks like cheap car compared to RX, in fact it looks a lot more like Kia than Lexus does. In fact, our dear picky Europeans rate RX's built quality far higher than their own ML... but ok, to each its own.

hmm... and I take it you have seen the new ML in person or just talking out of your ass again? The ML is and old car and yes, their has been many flaws. I have worked on the newer RX and older RX and can tell you that the older one was better built by far. The older one had overbuilt door panels, the newer ones uses three screws around the handle and just pops out. Look under the newer RX, under the knee airbag and the whole thing is loose. You'll also see a yellowish light, I have no idea what's that for.

The light under the dash is some useless thing that illuminates the petals at night, it dose the same for the passenger side.
Compared to the other luxury SUVs (MDX,FX,ML,) the RX is the best.
