It's so funny that this is actually going to be part of Saturn's line up. When I think of Saturn's current and past line ups, rear-wheel drive roadster doesnt exactly come to mind. But I hope this does something for Saturn's image - if this doesn't I don't know what would.

well, if GM is just going to give us Opel clones why not just bring the Opel name here? Id rather see Opels driving around than Saturns

I hope one of these cars (Pontiac solstice, Opel GT or Saturn Sky) will bring it here as holden, but i'm really sure it will be Opel GT because it will build in right hand drive. At this stage, i perfer Saturn Sky the most because of exterior and interior looks. This must be the first car i really love from Saturn.

I love it. Holy crapola, I love a Saturn. What is this world coming to?! Anyways yes I predict Saturn will be more like Vauxhall/Opel. We'll see two sedans, hatchback, roadster, crossover and two coupes, mpv. It'll be an eccentric company. Hey make sense...different kind of company, different kind of car. They can afford to try it with Saturn and for once sell the product along with the deal and great customer service. Damn it I need to run a car company, I was thinking this is the way to go at least a year ago. Oh well...one day guys one day.

So tell me, by turning Saturn into a rebdaged Opel (sporty inexpensive vehicles for every day driving), where does that leave Pontiac (GM's traditional maker of sporty inexpensive vehicles for every day driving)?

Roadster44
01-07-2005, 11:29 AM
Pontiacs are typically bigger, more concervatively, maturely styled. I never believed in one division taking away sales from another. You can't expect Pontiac to appeal to everybody's taste (it doesn't appeal to mine), but you can have Saturn also offer excitement in driving and appeal to a different audience (like me), and in the end profits still go to GM. Saturn will have more of an eccentric, European flavor and customers will appreciate that.

Pontiac will be the american sporty-performance brand, while saturn will be the import-fighting european-based sporty brand
"That coupe"is one of the best little guys GM has had in decades - and it wasn't even really a GM. I'd take one over the Sky any day. Even the name is cooler. Storm at least tells you what is going on in the sky. Its less vague. Sky - Is it sunny? Is rainy? Is that meteor really heading right towards my Sky? At least the hood of the Geo looks less like it got into a knife fight.
Speaking of Buick - Tiger Woods won that Buick sponsored tournament today. I wonder what he does with all those Raniers they give him?

he sells them on ebay

saturn sky you would think is for daft blondes who order automatic transmissions, the sucess of this car depends on them offering a slushbox
while i perfer the knife fight appearance; i dont think it fits the attractive pregnant housewife that Mr. Lutz outlined Pontiak's core audience to be

well, i guess building excitement. or maybe sadism.
you know - i think GM might actually be on to something. stealing a part of the young female market dominated by v6 automatic mustang convertables, mitsubish eclipse automatics, and all vw's.
i think this would actually be a good place to develop a cvt.
back on the driving gm products while pregnant may cause your unborn baby to grow a mullet front - perhaps they should offer a version of this that attaches to the top of the RELAY van. then it would be like stalking the whole family...
but is it a match for dent resistant panels?

I bet Lutz will talk about new Saturn Sky as Saturn DNA car... Which will in turn mean that whole point of Saturn is to rebadge other GM vehicles... Well, in fact, Lutz's main business theory envolves around rebadging... did it work? doesnt seem so. It is patch up strategy not long term one.

you are infact, correct; there is not another car in existence that this car shares anything with

I'm thinking about buying one as a summer car. I think its gorgeous. Different kind of company different kind of car. It makes sense. Vauxhalls/Opels are very unique these days.

wow. that is stunning. i saw the concept in person and it looked really nice, but in that dark blue it's even better. the interior looks great too, i just hope GM splurged a bit and put some soft plastic on the dashboard (which i doubt). still, this is a great-looking car, and since the solstice apparently drives well this should too. this should be a home run, i think; it's a really promising car

As long as they ditch that hideous rebadge of a minivan, and get the Lambda crossover, then they will have a sweet line-up.
As for the Sky itself, I would own one of these over the Solstice any day.

I would never pay 24k for a f-in Saturn... if its rebadging that they are doing over there that must mean the quality of the engine STILL SUCKS!

Saturn Dealers are in deep trouble right now. The only car that sells is the Ion, and it is not selling anywhere near the volume needed to keep the Saturn dealers healthy. Two thousand Skys a month won't help them much either. They need the Aura sooner than later, and a decent Ion. Now that Honda has raised the bar again with the 2006 Civic, it seems that GM and Saturn will soon be second-tier producers.

Better a year late than never!
Today I ran across a "test drive" here in AZ. Several German engineers sporting "Opel" ID badges (and a few Americans w/generic "GM" corporate ID's) were apparently comparing the competition on an "amazing" section of mountain road (engineer quotes, not mine - and I'm not disclosing the secret location - yet). The 2 Solstices were GXP's (one was marked "Engineering Use Only") and the Sky was identified as "not a Redline", which I read as verification that there would be such a model. I've really got to give these guys a pat on the back because they invited me to sit in the Sky and even put the top down for proper pictures.
After hearing some of my complaints about the styling of the Solstice, one of the Americans commented, "That's why there are two." And doesn't that just speak volumes?

I assume the turbocharged Sky will be designated with the marque VXR since Saturn becomes Opel at about the same time (or it might just be renamed GT)

I find the Saturn much more appealling visually than the Pontiac variant. With a significantly higher base price, I wonder what other differences there will be. Particularly, are we strictly looking at trim differences.

The reason is that the Pontiac has some of that old All-American muscle theme going on(i dont mean it is a muscle car!) which i really love and has been missing from American cars. This has some true American style in it and i like it how companies in NA are starting to go back to their roots in a big-style way and stopped trying to make Euro designs which ultimately fail. So, if i lived in the States id probably go for the Pontiac if all the differences are mainly visual.
